gnome won't start

Hi,

I downloaded and installed CentOS 6.1 on an old laptop, 2.0-GHz Celeron mobile, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, using CentOS-6.1-i386-bin-DVD1 and CentOS-6.1-i386-bin-DVD2. The installation ran and finished without a problem. When I was asked to reboot after installation I did. During the installation I chose to customize and in the Desktop package, I selected Desktop with a foot to its left.

When the system rebooted, I got a bar at the bottom of the screen with three color until the bar is all white. Then instead of gui starting, I get the following:

CentOS release 6.1 (Final)
Kernel 2.6.32-131.0.15.e16.i686 on a i686
localhost login

I typed root and password, then init 5, it stopped at

starting kdump [FAILED]

What can I do to fix it?

I got CentOS 6.5 to work on the same laptop but had to change rghb to nomodeset at boot up. Can this be fixed? I was hoping to get a version of CentOS to work on this laptop without me modifying it's boot up.
