Gnome version?

using RH9 + Gnome

Is there a command to verify versions of software installed?

Also.. how do you install desktop themes from source?

I tried and tried... I get the ___ file.tar.gz

gunzip to same dir

tar -xvf file.tar

./configure
make
make all

i dont know what to do after that..

I tried using the gui to do it and not successful at that either. If someone can point me in the right direction --it would be greatly appreciated..

I try taking that to usr/share/themes---w/ no luck

Thanks in advance to all that reply..

If you want to check the version of the software run in a console the command of the program and then "--help" something like:
$ gaim --help
and you get this:
'Gaim 0.76
Modo de uso: gaim [OPCIÓN]...'

also many programs have the option -v that shows the version

To install a theme you have to run the command "gnome-theme-manager" then you click install theme and you can change the theme.

Thank you for your reply.

I am trying to confirm the version of Gnome I am using. Installed RH9 and then did the yum update. Just trying to see which version I am at.

I am aware of the theme manager-my problem is getting the downloaded theme in the list. I think i am making this harder than what it is.

Here is what I do:
1. Download theme in tar.gz format to a home/downloads folder
2. Gunzip theme.tar.gz to same folder
3. cd to theme folder
4. tar -xvf theme.tar
5. from there I dont know what to do. I look for the "readme"

Sorry for the newbie question--If i can get past a few simple things I think I will enjoy Linux alot more..

Gnome is not only one program it's a bunch of programs like epiphany, nautilus, fille-roller and more. If you want to know your version go to the redhat page and see what is the last version of gnome available for redhat9 on the server.

After untar the theme copy it on the .themes directory that is in your home directory
