GNOME to KDE

Hi everyone!
I use Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 for AMD. I have been using GNOME and now would like to shift to KDE. I dont have KDE installed on my system. How do I go about doing it?

Thank you.

sudo apt-get install kde

once KDE is installed you can choose the 'session' (gnome/kde/other) prior to logging into the system.

You might also be more comfortable using the Synaptic package manager.

Since you seem to be unfamiliar with managing software packages it's really worthwhile reviewing some guidelines:

That's all right. I love the command line :D
Anyways thanx for the concern, I appreciate it. :)

Will I need different packages ? Or those that worked in Gnome will work in KDE as well ?

They will, but they won't look as fancy as they did on Gnome (unless they changed something I do not know about, or there is some way to style GTK apps on non-GTK desktops...).

Gnome has a default set of applications, so does KDE.. as long as the Libraries for the desktop environment (KDE or GNOME) are installed the apps will run under either desktop.

For instance i use the Gnome desktop, but my preferred CD Burning application is K3B works perfectly well under Gnome.

So basically you can keep using the same applications you are using now, or you can investigate the KDE alternatives. it;s really upt o you you are not forced to use any specific applications under either desktop.

Word processing
Gnome - abiword (part of Gnome Office)
KDE - Kword (part of Koffice)

Spreadsheet
Gnome - Gnumeric
KDE - Kspread

gothika,

this may not be compulsory: merely complimentary.
it is an honor to get answer from a "guru", if it was my post i would have clicked the blue thumbs-up button at the lower right corner to compliment his effort for helping me. that blue thumbs up button is the highest tribute of gratitude we can compliment for those great people who sacrifice their time for the benefit of those who need help for free.

If LinuxQuestions.org was a religion, that blue thumbs up button is the only tithe we can offer, simple though but sacred and holy it is to the linux priesthood.

:)

Guru status just means I spend far to much time on this forum rather than doing more productive work.. :)

@farslayer
