Smile Gnome-terminal failed to open

Hi all, i installed YDL 6.1 on my Powerbook G4 yesterday. 'Great' i thought to myself, all i had to do was install Java from IBM site and i'm off and running. To complete installation of said Java (6) i was told to open Terminal. When i tried this i got an error message telling me Gnome Terminal failed to open (or failed to start - it was late last night and can't remember which). Anyway, what are your thoughts on this? I'm used to O.S.'s working when they are installed so i'm guessing it is something simple that as a newbie i don't yet know about.

Can you first answer:-
- Did you open it manually, or application tried to open it?
- What exactly you did to open the temrinal (used something like right click > terminal or CLI)?
- How did you try to install java (GUI or CLI?, If CLI, what commands used)?

Well, there could be many reason(s), but you need to provide little more details.
Also once invoke following cmd from any already opened terminal, and share the result:-
Code:
~$ gnome-terminal &

pressing the key Ctrl-Alt-F2 will give you a terminal, you will have to login with your user name and password then become root to install your applications.

To go back to the graphical mode press the keys Atl+F7
Ofcourse this is all assuming your distro has the same behavior as the rest, but for sure I have never used before.

Good luck to you!

Smile Gnome terminal.

Hi there thankyou for your replies. you'll have to be patient with me, i don't understand terms like 'invoke'; what does that mean in plain english? To put it simply i have installed Linux so that i can play an online scrabble game on my Powerbook G4, which requires Java 6.

"Did you open it manually, or application tried to open it"
-I did not open it, I Left-clicked on it and i got error message Gnome-Terminal failed to start.

"What exactly you did to open the temrinal (used something like right click > terminal or CLI)"
-See answer above.

"How did you try to install java (GUI or CLI?, If CLI, what commands used)"
-I did not try to install Java as this required Terminal to be opened.

So that is it, that is all the info. i can give. As i have said you'll have to be patient with me, i only have experience with OS X and windows so terms like GUI, CLI, Invoke, cmd, and distro mean nothing to me (i'll have a stab in the dark and guess that cmd is command!), although i'm willing to learn, i've been curious about linux for a while and i like a challenge.

I'll try Ctrl-Alt-F2 this evening and let you know how i get on.

Thanks again i appreciate the replies.
