Question gnome system menu logo and shutting down X

Hello, I'm truly a newbie to linux, but learning all the time
My distro is Redhat 8 (2.4.18-17.8.0) and I have a couple of question about it, I hope somebody can give me some advice.

1) Can i change the Gnome system menu logo? It has the Red Hat logo as a default and I would like to have Gnomes own logo (the footprint) instead of it. Is this possible and how?

2) During the installation I chose to boot straight to X, but there are some things that I would need to do without X running. The problem is that I havent found a way to shut down X without shutting down the whole machine. Gnome only gives options to shut down, reboot or log out, but not to shut down X. How do I shut down X, or how do I change the boot default to boot into terminal?

Hi,

You can change to a terminal, just by pressing CTRL + ALT + F2 (or F3, F4, F5) ...

or exec, as root:

# init 3

see ya ...

the best way to do it is to edit the /etc/inittab
there is a line that says something like id:5:initdefault
put that on 3 and it should boot to the commandline

Here's how to change the gnome menu logo in redhat 9:
Look in /usr/share/pixmaps
The logo in use is redhat-main-menu.png
Login as root, save redhat-main-menu.png under a new name, and copy a png of your choice, e.g. apple-red.png, to redhat-main-menu.png
