gnome resolution fixed at 640x480

I just installed Debian etch (2.6.28) and gnome comes up with the screen res set to 640x480. No other settings are present when I use Settins->preferences->screen resolution. It's the only setting available. I looked at /etc/X11/xorg.conf and the default res should be 1024x768. The file is listed below. Can you see anything that might be wrong?

I had the same problem with debian etch and did the following: opened a terminal, became root and: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg ,there comes a list of configurations. There select your preferred resolution. When finished, restart and if still at 640x480 go to the option of screen resolution, there should be a drop-down list
