GNOME Power Manager configuration has not been installed correctly
 

Newbie here.
Desktop
XP pro on sda1
Ubuntu 9.10 on sdb1 Wubi

First of all, Thank you to whomever can get me out of this mess!

I was trying to do a sbackup of my Ubuntu 9.10 since I had it all set-up the way I wanted it. Since I'm new to Linux, perhaps I stopped sbackup before it was finished because I could not see anything happening for a while and thought it was done. When I rebooted it gave me the " Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly, etc.

Here's what I have to do now to get Ubuntu to start:

sh:grub> linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=/dev/sda2 loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro
sh:grub> initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic
sh:grub> boot

After this I get a black desktop with a blue log in window. When I log in I get the GNOME Power Manager error message.
So I tried Failsafe GNOME and got a black desktop with only a mouse cursor that I could move around.
KDE and Xterm all came up with the original error message.

Can this problem be fixed from the sh:grub>
OR, do I use my live Ubuntu CD?
OR, ???

BTW, I saved a copy of my Ubuntu folder with the disks.

The first thing I would try is using a virtual console to reinstall the power manager.

Thank you for the response, but can you tell me step by step how to use the virtual console to restore the power manager? And would this "virtual console" be the live Ubuntu cd or VirtualBox?

Try this at the command line (CTRL-ALT-F2 and login as root):
/sbin/fixfiles onboot

then reboot and see if that fixes your issue.

The messed-up system disks are saved and stored right now. I gave up trying since I couldn't access them. And didn't see your response until this morning.

Last night I did a fresh install to my slave HDD after making partitions, etc. manually. So, this time my /home is separate from the rest of the system.
Slowly learning.... ;)

Don't worry, I still plan on trying your suggestion. Once I'm sure that I can install Linux on my wife's computer without screwing things up!
But, for now I'm setting up this one like I had it before. Trying to resemble some of the xp stuff that my wife & I are used to, but with the leaner, faster, better Linux/Ubuntu system. I'll have to dual boot on both computers since there are still some programs that we need that won't run even with Wine.

same problem...tried that, didn't work...said that the file dosent exist

ok..so i installed policycoreutils ....did /sbin/fixfiles onboot again....didnt do anything...then i purged gnome-power-manager...again..nothing...now..it dosent show me the error..." http://yfrog.com/5acapture3alj "
