gnome panel

I have looked through previous newbie postings and checked the web and RedHat7.2 documentation and have not found an answer to this question.

On boot the gnome panel does not appear. The panel can be started by typing "panel" at the command line.

How can the panel be started when gnome starts?

The panel is supposed to appear automatically, but sometimes your Gnome settings get screwed up. You can try "rm -rf ~/.gnome" and new settings will be created automatically.

tried it

Thanks for the hint zmedico.

Unfortunately it doesn't fix the problem. After removing the .gnome file and rebooting the machine the error "Application "panel" (process 1266) has crashed due to a fatal error (segmentation fault)" popped up in a window after gnome tried to start.

From the command line I am still able to start the panel with the command panel.

Any hints on how to fix the underlying error?

We already have a thread on this:

existing threads

Read both existing threads on gnome panel. Neither thread proposes solution to fix panel start up at boot other than removal of .gnome and restart. Removal of .gnome and restart doesn't fix the problem.

I posted a bug report through bugzilla for gnome. Gnome support responded that it's a known bug that should be fixed in gnome 1.4.1.

Sorry if starting a new thread broke some kind of rule. I searched with string "panel" in newbie forum and didn't find the two threads on gnome panel.
