Question gnome hang problem

I'm completely a newbie in Linux, and I've just installed Redhat Linux 7.2 with gnome as the graphical interface. Everything seems fine as I'm installing redhat on my PC.

Problem occured when I choose Linux gnome... in failsafe mode linux runs fine. but in gnome my pc just hangs, having no idea on why, I just restart linux the "unclean" way.

What I see, the login screen is fine, when I enter the gnome interface, not right away, but I couldn't move the mouse eventually, as well as the keyboard has no response, pressing num lock has no effect.

Could someone shed some light on why gnome hangs? Is it my swap space? or do I need to configure my IP? Anything is good, I just need to find out what went wrong with my installation.

seems to me you have a xfree86 config problem, run xf86config as root and reconfigure mouse, videocard, monitor etc...

Wink thanks guys

I'd like to use redhat linux v9, but I don't have it just yet... could be the drivers... don't know, I'm just a newbie.

How do I exactly change my hostname? when I enter in gnome the PC hangs, someone said that it just take a long time, come now... 5-7 minutes of waiting?

I'm planning to reinstall linux 7.2, though I don't think it will make any difference. Since, I can't find the specific drivers for my Monitor(MAG 770FS), and Mouse, only used generic types. and how come Linux didn't ask me to specify my lan card driver?

At times, old PC seems to make Linux installation a breeze.

I had a problem with Gnome hanging on login. I was searching and found this thread, then solved the problem today, so I thought I'd post it here...

I used a utility called firewall-config to configure a firewall using ipchains (as opposed to manually writing the config file for ipchains which I don't know how to do.)

The firwall was causing gnome to hang! I had to create a rule to allow all incoming traffic from the machine's own loopback address 127.0.0.1

Apperently there is some communication within the system using it's own loopback address of 127.0.0.1 and when that was blocked by the ipchains firewall it didn't work!
