Gnome dependancies

Hi, I have installed Debian Sarge on a Sony PCG-Z505LS via all 14 CD's as I can't get the internet on the old girl but I cant get Gnome (or KDE, don't mind which as they are both good) running. I have tried installing the x window system: apt-get install x-window-system - but I get a list of unmet dependancies:

x-window-system-core but is not installable
lbxproxy but it is not going to be installed
proxymngr but it is not going to be installed
twm but it is not installable
xdm but it is not going to be installed
xnest but it is not going to be installed
xprt-xprintorg but it is not going to be installed
xterm but it is not going to be installed
xvfb but it is not going to be installed

The list for apt-get install gnome reads:

gnome-desktop environment (+64) but it is not installable
gnome-office (+64) but it is not going to be installed
bluefish but it is not going to be installed
evolution (>= 2.0.3) but it is not going to be installed
gnome-cups-manager (>= 0.25) but it is not going to be installed
gnome-nettool but it is not going to be installed
gnome-system-tools (>= 1.0.0) but it is not going to be installed
gnome-themes-extras but it is not going to be installed
rythmbox but it is not going to be installed
synaptic (+ 0.53.4) but it is not going to be installed or gnome-apt but it is not going to be installed
totem but it is not going to be installed
vino (>= 2.8.1) but it is not going to be installed
xsxreensaver but it is not installable

as I say I have unpacked all 14 cds onto the system so I don't really know how I can resolve the dependancies any advice for a noob would be appriciated.

p.s. sorry if I posted in the wrong section

What does your sources list look like? Perhaps you just have apt looking in the wrong place.

I have this:

#deb file:///cdrom/sarge main

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r2 _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-14 (20060419)] / unstable main

this is then repeated with the binary number changing all the way down to Binary-2. the remainder of the line is the same.

Hi, sorry to have to bump this up without any more information but I still haven't been able to resolve my problem. Do you think that as my sources list refers to the cd's that I would need to have the relevant CD in the drive when trying to install a package? I only ask as I'm not prompted to put any in when using apt-get.

I'm not familiar with using aptitude in the slightest but if you think I would have a different result using that instead if you could tell me specifically what packages I would need to check (I had a go but I end up with loads of 'broken' ones) that would be appriciated.

If you need more info to help you help me please ask, I'm not really sure what yo[u would need.

many thanks,

sociopathicsolicitor
