Gnome apps in KDE

Hello people,

I'm new to Linux and this is my first entry on linuxquestions.org, but I suspect not my last.

After having played around with various Linux distros - without actually using them much - I finally settled for a Debian Sarge netinstall.

There are some issues with sound and locales, but what I'd really like to know is why I get both Gnome and KDE apps in the application menu when running KDE, but when I run Gnome I get a much tidier look with only Gnome apps.

Having a bunch of applications that do the same thing is confusing, and I suspect it may result in conflicts for sound and locales.

Is there any configuration file I can adjust to clean Gnome out of KDE?

Thanks,

JakobW

What you're seeing are just icons to applications. Those applications aren't actually running.

So long as you have Gnome and KDE installed on the same box, for the most part you can run applications from one set on another.

If you want to tidy up the icons, there's a menu editor in KDE, I don't recall off the top of my head where it is, you might also be able to right click on the icon itself and go to some sort of remove option.

Ok, so what you're saying is that this is normal? Has it to do with the GDM being the default display manager? I guess I'm just curious why I don't see the same thing in a Gnome session.

I found the menu editor, so I'll fix it up that way.

Thanks,

Jakob

KDE is designed to show you all applications that are installed on your system, regardless of whether they are native kde applications or gnome apps. I am not sure how you can disable this feature, but you could use the menu editor in KDE to remove them from the menu.

Ah, that cleared a question mark or two. Thanks.

Now that I know that this has nothing to do with the 'real' problems I'm having with sound and locales I'll investigate other leads to solutions.

I'll do some more reading to see if I can solve it on my own before shooting off questions here.

regards,

Jakob
