Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Is there some magic sequence of keys that I can press to bring up something like the task manager in windows?
I already tried ctrl-alt-delete, ctrl-c, ctrl-break, alt-tab .......
This is what happend:
I just clicked on some highlighted text in the query tool of pgAdmin III. I heard the hard drive chatter for a bit then the screen froze up i.e. i can't click on anything to activate it - e.g. none of the buttons on the task bar work, min/max buttons in pgAdmin... The mouse moves (but it is a funny looking "+" sign) and it sounds like one of my background tasks is still running - I'm downloading a bunch of files and every now and then I hear the hard drive writing them. Pressing the Caps lock / Num lock a few times causes the lights on the keyboard to blink so I know interupts are still working. I have a feeling that Gnome quit or is in some kind of "mode".
What I really want to do is bring the terminal window in which I'm FTPing the files to the front, wait until that's done and then reboot.
