Angry Gnome 2.4 startup problem in Slack 9.1

Ok....

I'm running Slackware 9.1 on a 20Gb HD shared with Windows XP, 64Mb RAM, Intel PIII/Celeron ~633Mhz. Linux is on a 5Gb EXT2 partition and swap filespace is 780Mb.

I have (to my knowledge) successfully installed and integrated Gnome into my Linux installation. At the root prompt though, atfer typing 'startx' to load the Gnome interface, the execution script terminates at the following message....

----------------------------------------------------------------------
gnome session:error while loading shared libraries
:libart_lpgl_2.so.2:cannot open shared object file
:no such file or directory
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I was not informed of a missing file during the Linux setup when I installed Gnome. I have searched the boards endlessly to find solutions to this problem but have been unable to find useful information.

If anyone could help me locate the file, or possibly find a replacement for it or if anyone could come up with some way to remedy the problem it would be greatly appreciated

Thnx,
An eager newbie

did you compile gnome from source or use the slackware packages that come on the cd's?

if you compiled from source, a search on google should get you the package you need, however the gnome on the slack cd's ought to work well

*edit: i guess google doesn't show anything... hmm, might it be a library that should have been installed with gnome?

well...

I've abandoned the Gnome interface and I'm now using KDE, but the same message appears (this time i also received a simplified message saying that KDEinit couldn't be started)

I installed both Gnome and KDE (along with the entire Slackware pakage) from ftp.funet.fi - Finnish University and Research network Linux archives.

I think I'm going to just look for KDE and Gnome somewhere else for now and possibly use pkgconfig or something to figure out whats wrong.

Thnx for the reply and anymore info would be more than welcome

mount your slackware disc 2

cd to your cd-rom mount folder, then into the gnome folder, and as root, do pkgtool

use this to install packages from the current directory and it will install gnome for you without any problems (you will install many packages)

you should download the slackware packages from the slackware website in slackware-current

you may also want to check out dropline gnome
