gNewSense no Internet connection

Hi guys, I'm having a problem connecting to the Internet on my gNewSense installation. My Internet works fine through Ubuntu and Windows, but not through gNewSense, is there anyway of fixing this? Also, while searching around I found that somebody said I ought to type "dmesg" and copy the results. Maybe that will help? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Can you post here the output of these commands?

Code:

--$ /sbin/ifconfi -a
--$ netstat -r

Also tell us how do you connect to the internet:

Are you connected via LAN?
What does your internet provider give you, a static IP Address or they serve you varied IPs through DHCP?

We need those info before we can give any help.

Karen6 09-27-2010 12:07 PM

Alright, here is the output on both those commands

Code:

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

deltah@gnewsense:~$ /sbin/ifconfi -a
bash: /sbin/ifconfi: No such file or directory
deltah@gnewsense:~$ /sbin/ifconfig -a

deltah@gnewsense:~$ netstat -r

deltah@gnewsense:~$
deltah@gnewsense:~$

Also, I'm connected via a LAN, there are other computers on my router. And I'm not 100% sure on my IP, I know it's not a Static IP, but I'm also able to change the IP whenever I want.

Karen6 09-27-2010 05:27 PM

Surely somebody has to know how to fix this :(

Hangdog42 09-27-2010 07:48 PM

Actually what we need is the output from lspci. That will tell us which chipset your card uses and we might be able to point you to a driver. With gNewSense however, there may be chipsets it can't handle because there aren't open source drivers available.

evo2 09-27-2010 07:49 PM

I suspect your problem is that your network device needs some non free firmware that is not in gnewsense (the whole point of gnewsense is to only use free software). So, we need to know what device you have. As such can you please post the output of:

Code:

lspci | grep -i net
Cheers,

Evo2.

malekmustaq 09-29-2010 07:58 AM

Karen6,

Your card is down, no ip address. There is no content in your route cache. This means that either you have not bring up your ethcard,
Code:

--$ /sbin/config eht0 up
or that your card is not supported: or there is not pre-installed driver to your card.

To my experience gNewSense did not support my card also. Actually, had device manufacturers provide free driver source to the open software community this obstacle cannot exist. We have to wait.

The policy behind gnewsense is "fully free" operating system: that is, avoiding to use anything bound by copyright laws that imposes legal burden upon the user.

Better luck next time.

Hope it helps.
