This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Hello, I have installed over three distros in the past week and none have worked on runlevel 5 except Mandrake 10. I finnally got mandrake working and I am pleased with it. Winamp was one of my favorite apps on windows and when I found out that xmms was the same thing just about I got excited. I've downloaded xmms and when I tryed to install I found out I needed glib. I went to the ftp site from the INSTALL help file in xmms. I got version 1.2.9 I installed glib
(or at least it looked like it installed clean) and went back to xmms. When I type ./configure I get this...
checking for glib-config... /usr/local/bin/glib-config
checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.2...
*** 'glib-config --version' returned 1.2.9, but GLIB (1.2.10)
*** was found! If glib-config was correct, then it is best
*** to remove the old version of GLIB. You may also be able to fix the error
*** by modifying your LD_LIBRARY_PATH enviroment variable, or by editing
*** /etc/ld.so.conf. Make sure you have run ldconfig if that is
*** required on your system.
*** If glib-config was wrong, set the environment variable GLIB_CONFIG
*** to point to the correct copy of glib-config, and remove the file config.cache
*** before re-running configure
configure: error: *** GLIB >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first ***
I did not install ver 1.2.10...does it come with mandrake already? How do I remove the old version of glib? I have no idea how to edit those files...What is the problem? Do I need glib version 1.2.2 for xmms to run? Is it that picky? I have two pretty thick books on linux and ones to boring because it's aimed at windows users making the transfer to linux, cleverly named "Kiss the blue screen of death goodbye" and the other book is really advanced administration topics. Something for Linux+ cert. Anyways I have decided to make Linux my new OS of choice and do not plan on switching back to windoze. ANY help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
If you uninstall the glib that Mandrake is using loads of things will break. Why don't you use the Mandrake Control Centre to install what you need? It'll be called libglib-1.2.10-devel or something very similar. Good luck. Xmms is cool. The visualizers aren't great but the sound quality is. You could probably use the version of glib you installed if you did what your error message suggests.
