gl problems in 2.6.9

I'm using the patched nvidia drivers under linux 2.6.9, and my gnome desktop seems to be using the drivers (i get the nvidia bootsplash on startx), but i can't do anything with gl. when i try to run glxgears i get:

james@lucy:~$ glxgears
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.

Recently i installed dropline gnome. could that have wiped out some critical gl files? why is 3d acceleration working but not
