Untar the file, move the directory it (should) create into your ~/.gkrellm2/themes directory.

For example:
Code:
$ ls -l ~/.gkrellm2/themes
total 8
drwxr-xr-x   8 chris chris 4096 Jan 23  2003 MonkeyLovers
drwxr-xr-x  12 chris chris 4096 Nov 10  2002 clain

I did this:

tar xvzf GKrellM-skins.tar.gz

Then I moved the newly created GKrellM-skins folder to ~/.gkrellm2/themes

Now in the gkrellm configuration, under themes I can click on Default or GKrellM-skins but when I do it tells me I have 0 total theme alternatives.

If I right click on gkrellm and select Theme then Next gkrellm disapears completely but is not shut down as I can check by right clicking on the slit in fluxbox.

All the themes in the GkrellM-skins folder are tar.gz files. Do I need to untar them as well?

Yeah, you probably need to untar those too. It sounds like the tarball you downloaded is just a collection of themes. So you need to untar and copy over the specific theme(s) you want. For reference, here's the list of the "MonkeyLovers" directory in ~/.gkrellm2/themes. When you copy over a directory, it should resemble something like this:
Code:
$ ls -l ~/.gkrellm2/themes/MonkeyLovers
total 92

Is there a way to untar all of these files at once? I am trying:

tar xvzf *.tar.gz

but this isn't working for me. Any suggestions? Do I have to do this for each theme!?

As far as I understand how gkrellm handles themes.... yes... Notice I only have two themes You could read up on the gkrellm documentation to find out if there are any other ways to incorporate the theme.

tar xvzf *.tar.gz
I don't believe tar handles multiple files on the command line (I don't seem to have the man page for tar... odd). Anyway, you can execute a find command instead:
Code:
find -name "*.tar.gz" -exec tar xvzf {} \;
Be forewarned: some tarballs do not create a directory to untar into. So the directory containing all the tar files may get cluttered if any of the theme tar files are like that.

that is a cool hack
it's always the shell script guys who can do things in an instant it would take a c hacker a month to figure out.
