Given a Jaunty Jackalope PC but not the adminstrator passwords

I was given Ubuntu /JJackalope desktop set thru a charity [www.donateapc.org] 8 years ago but lack passwords to use system fully. Am stuck on user1 folder.

How can I make my set my own? Set new passwords, etc.

Here are instructions to reset the password in Ubuntu (you may need to modify them slightly since you're using such an old release):

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

However Jaunty Jackalope has been completely unsupported and obsolete since 2010! Therefore I recommend you do a fresh reinstall of a currently-supported distribution that's targeted for older hardware (such as Xubuntu, Lubuntu, AntiX, etc). If you tell us your hardware specs, we can try to recommend a suitable distro.

The hiren boot CD has several good password resetting tools on it, if do a google search you should be able to find it. But I would do a back up of your PC before you do that........just in case.

That is not needed. Recovery mode in the PC should suffice.

I agree, tell us the HW make/model (ideally any details you are sure of; there's probably a menu item that shows this).
You need a more up to date OS.

If you can handle the cmd line, try something like the content of /var/log/dmesg or possibly boot.log; not sure of the Ubuntu filename.

You are a trusting lot

What if I post.

I got my hands on a laptop recently with Ubuntu on it, but I can't remember the username or password.
Can you help me get to the username files? I need them badly.
