Give up Linux?
I am new to Linux and have been running Ubuntu 10.10 netbook for about 6 months. I really like Linux as opposed to windows I guess and I love the Linux Community and what it stands for free and GNU and I wish I knew enough programming to contribute
BUT I REALLY need to run MS Publisher 2003 I have the latest WINE and PlayOnLinux but no luck still get "error has occurred" popups I have 3 yrs worth of work in Publisher and do not want to redo it all from scratch in Open Office Draw. Thats stupid. People tell me just dual boot, but whats the point? If I go back to windows I can still surf the net and run open office I do not play video games so that is a pointless arguement Is it absolutely impossible to open .pub files in Linux? Do I have to pay S120 to get Windows 7 and another to $100 for Publisher 2007 to make this work? Isn't this what Linux is supposed to be against? |

Yes , Linux is against that . But Linux is against that in it's territory (u can't make china let more liberty in it's country , u can make only your country to have more liberty)
So if you have to use Microsoft's products you need to buy them . If you have a powerful computer , say ... good processor + 2GB RAM , u could also put Windows in the virtual machine , and also the publisher ... so u don't have to dualboot EDIT : i din't specify what virtual machine is : a virtual pc running inside your current os ... like .. a guest os TRY VIRTUALBOX |

Linux is not against anything, much less against you paying for the software you use (in fact, there are commercial Linux distributions just like Red Hat).
If you have a thousand million files on a proprietary format you can't blame Linux for not being able to open them. It's like buying a thousand games for psp and then blaming your nintendo ds because it can't play them. People should really be more concerned about proprietary vs. open data formats. That, and only that, is which decides who is the true proprietary of your data. I can only give you two suggestions: either try to work closely with the wine team to get the publisher support into shape or research in the internet for a way to convert the pub files to something else that doesn't tie you to MS.
