Unhappy GIMP gradient blend difficulties

Hi, I hope I'm in the right forum?
I'm very familiar with Photoshop, (& love it) and decided to try Gimp- very impressive, but i cannot get the gradient fills to work from the nice assorted list in the menu- all I get when I use it is a single gradient from foreground to background colours only.
I'm using the gimp for windows (under w98se), and installed kde (I think it was) first as requested.
Either there's a problem with the particular program itself, or I'm missing something obvious, I figure.
Any answers would be appreciated, thanks!
