Gimp Clone Brush Question seen elsewhere many times different answers none work

Hi
I am posting here because this is an issue that many newbies seem to have.
I am not exactly a newbie, but I am having this newbie-type problem and figure it needs to be addressed by the Gimp community and I don't know the right place to put it.
In my Ubuntu 12.10 Gimp 2.8 simply won't allow me to use the clone brush.
In gimp on my windows machine it works.
On my other machines, running 12.04 and 12.10 respectively, it works.
Seems obvious there is something I need to do/check on the system on which it doesn't work. I have tried all the solutions I see when googling this; none work.
It may be a gpu/driver problem. If so, where do I find out how to fix/solve it?
I am not exactly a newbie, as I said. But this problem has made me feel like a newbie, if not changed me into one.
Thanks for listening. Thanks for pointers to solution.
Pete

how did you install gimp?
or is this the default Ubuntu version

there are TWO "clone" tools
the regular clone
then the crossed "band-aids" -- that is the "heal" clone tool

for clone
click the icon
select the brush ( a fuzzy round is best) and size
select the type "registered, alined, or none
press and holed on the area that you want to have cloned

then paint with it

Hi, John
Using Ubuntu default.
All this stuff works on my other systems, including windows.
Just don't know how to fix the problem on this one machine, on which all other Ubuntu stuff seems to work just fine.
I am still trying to work through all the stuff Ofnuts suggested.
