Getting wireless network to work on knoppix

Hello. I've recently decided to give Knoppix a try to get introduced to linux. I am running version 6.7 from a cd.

I'm having trouble trying to get connected to a wireless network. I was looking through some other threads and maybe it has something to do with Knoppix not recognizing my wireless driver....? Right now no options show up under wireless when I go to edit connections I'm really just a total noob at this so be gentle please

Thanks

Your wifi card is the reaktek 8152 card. To get it working you need to find a driver for it. This is a link to the driver page for this device on realtek's site, they posted a tar.gz of the source for the driver (note: click download link 2, 1 seems to be broken). You may want to try searching the repos that knoppix uses for a precompiled bianary to install instead of compiling this source because it appears to be slightly old.

Ok so I'm having trouble installing the driver. I've untarred the file I downloaded from that site, but I'm having trouble understanding the instructions on the readme it provides.

What does the README tell you to do? If you want to, send me the link to the file and I can have a look at it for you.

What the readme is telling you to do is to move into the top directory of the extracted file and run make which will read and execute the makefile that is stored in this folder. Then execute the command make install which will install the driver which has been compiled with make. Then you should be able to reboot to load the driver and follow the setting up wireless instructions later on in the text file. (by the way, this will require a working gcc).
