getting VLC media player to work
 
hello, I want to be able to watch DVDs on my computer. But I put in a DVD and go to VLC media player and it won't play. I try going to open file, and I tell it to open the DVD (which shows up on my desktop and everything) and it still doesn't play anything. how can I make it work?

O, I'm sorry! I should have told you that I have Hardy Heron and my architecture (if that matters) is x86-64 (AMD64). what do those numbers and letters stand for anyway? and why is it useful to know the architecture? I guess its useful to know the distribution because you know what code works.

The numbers refer to the processor you're using. It's useful to know the architecture because some programs don't have versions for certain architectures.
