Getting text bootup

I just installed linux 7.3 with text boot. Then we copy from another linux server file systems onto the new server. Now it's for some unknown recern it boots up into gnome start-up screen...is their any way of telling it to boot up into normal text mode…
Next one is how do you change the setting of the gnome from 1024x768 to 800x600 in text mode…because I just changed the monitor of the linux server from a 17” to a 15” monitor, and now I can’t get see gnome when I type startx at the root…

Please help……?????????

To boot without starting X, change the initdefault line in your /etc/inittab file from:
id:5:initdefault:
to:
id:3:initdefault:

To change the resolution of your X server to 800x600, edit the Screen|Display directive of your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file to look like:
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "800x600"
EndSubsection
