Getting Stuck installing HP D1663 Printer

Hi,

Iḿ using Linux Mint Helena and just got myself a new HP Deskjet D1663 printer.
However, I followed the instructions on
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web...linuxmint.html
but am getting stuck at Step 5A
When I put the command
Quote:
make
it gives the error
Quote:
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
I'm also surprised that the http://hplipopensource.com website had no option for Linux Mint 8 (Helena) and thus i had to follow instructions and do installations as per Linux Mint 5 or 6
I hope the Step 2 (Install Dependency Packages) has not adversely affected my Linux 8.

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

You seem to be going the wrong way up a one way street.

The instructions your are following tell you how to COMPILE HPLIP

You do not need to compile. Just download the ready-made version. Remember that Mint is Derived from Ubuntu. Try the Automatic Installer - http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/downloads.html

Note that is also says on this page:

"Manual Installation: The HPLIP Source Code Tarball (Only Recommended for Advanced Users)

While this is the more traditional method to download and install HPLIP, it requires a degree of knowledge that users new to Linux may find more difficult than they would prefer. It requires that you manually install dependencies and run build and install commands in a console/terminal. To use it, follow the directions at our Manual Installation Instructions page."

It may be a silly question, but have you checked that you do need to install the HP software? I suspect that Mint will have it already: Fedora does. Try connecting the printer, switching on, and running the command "sudo hp-setup".

thanks, it installed and successfully printed the default test page.

How would I EVER have known such a feature existed

But there still seems to be a problem - when I try to print from any application, it processes the job and the printer icon in the tray comes up with the job listed (saying processing), and the printer light even starts blinking as if printing will begin any moment, but it doesn't.
