LinuxQuestions.org - Getting Radeon 7000 card to work in Yellowdog

I inherited an old beige G3 366 Power Mac from a friend. Since then, I have successfully installed both Panther (10.3) and Tiger (10.4) on this machine using XPostFacto. Recently, I successfully installed Yellowdog Linux (3.0.1) on this machine and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked.

I have a Radeon 7000 which works quite happily in both OS 9.1 and OS X, but refuses to function in Linux. When I have attempted to get the card to work, it probes for the card but misidentifies as a Radeon VE. Eventually, the result is a black screen. On the other hand, the built-in video for this G3 works well in Linux.

I did some googling around and discovered one solution which sounded promising. Someone who couldn't get a Radeon 7000 card to work in a beige G3 successfully did so by adding this line, which was as follows:

video=radeon:vmode:17,cmode:8

Unfortunately, the post doesn't identify where he put this line. I presume he typed it in BootX dialog box, More kernel arguments. I tried it there, booted into Linux and still have a black screen.

I did some more googling around and discovered that YDL 4.0 supports the Radeon 7000. However, YDL 4.0 is designed to be installed on New World Macs. It can be installed on Old World Macs with some initial modifications. I found another post which went into some detail, but I didn't quite understand it. The post can be found here:

It looks like I'll have better success if I pursue the latter route. I just need to figure out exactly how to accomplish the install of YDL 4.0.
