getting online with mandrake...
ok i used this program called vmware to install mandrake on my pc, so basically i can use windows and linux all at once :D. However, i wanted to try and connect to the internet on linux but when i try to configure mandrake's network connection settings, it doesn't connect....any advice?

I don't know but here's my guess:
Since windows has your network initialized already, Mandrake in VMWare is unable to initialize it since it already has. Try running winipcfg (something different in xp) and releasing your IP, then see what happens in VMWare. |
You should, first, provide some information on how you connect to the internet.

In Mandrake, go in to Mandrake Control Center. Find the internet connection icon. Then select to automatically get an IP address. After a few minutes, it should be up and running. You may have to look in the hardware list to see if the netword device is properly installed.

hmm, well i think i did that, and it didnt connect...at least i thought thats what i did, but i'll try it again and see. thanks...didnt think anyone was going to reply to this :)

i have the same problem with mandrake 9.1 on vmware 4. but when i install windows xp on vmware. then my connection works fine. i've tried using the same settings as the windows xp i installed on vmware , but that doesn't help

Wouldn't you have to first disable your Internet connection under windows in order to use the Internet in via Linux?
|
Oh, and one more thing I noticed. Don't trust the auto-detect utility for detecting an internet connection, it kept telling me I was connected through an LAN when my DSL box connected to SBC was sitting right next to me ;) . So set up you Internet connection device according to what you have, and you may need to log out and then back in for it to work (in my experience, I had to try several times for it to take, re-adjust my settings to the correct ones each time. go figure)
