Are you using a wired or a wireless connection?
If it's an aging laptop, I presume the networking is done via a PCMCIA card of some sort? Which one? Which laptop is it?

yes I am wired by usb to the laptop (tiny a440).
I am directly connected to the router which works
okay with windows xp.
any easy solution would be good.

my pcmcia card is a texas institute pci-1225.
is connecting to the net normally difficult with
linux and is it okay to connect just using a cd
to boot,or will I have to load on to the hard drive.
