getting LI when trying to boot SuSE 7.0

Hi Guys !!!

This is the scenario :

I have a dual boot machine with Windows98 in one hdd and SuSE 7.0 in the other. I use a floppy diskette to load my LILO at boot time.
Now, since yesterday I am not able to boot Linux into my machine.
Firstly, it could not start all the services at RunLevel 3. So, I put the boot diskette and fixed the problem. But, after that I am unable to boot using the LILO diskette or the boot diskette. It says "LI" at the LILO prompt and remains stuck.

Is it possible that LILO in both the diskettes are corrupted ?

What should I do ?

Please help with your valuable suggestions.

Informative stuff !!!

Thank you fancypiper for all the info. This isn't a direct solution to the problem in hand but should be able to get some clue out of it.

At this point, I am not able to get to the hdd which has linux kernel. If I try to download the floppy boot image and put it in a floppy and try loading using it, will it work ?

Most distros have a rescue proceedure that you can boot from the first install CD. I haven't uses SuSE, so I am unfamiliar with their tools.

A linux live cd is handy to have lying around when these things happen. Do you have a KNOPPIX Linux Live CD lying around? If not, dl/order it.

Another problem with my m/c is it can't boot from CD-ROM. I tried using the CD that come's with the distro. The only rescue media was the floppy diskette and I while fixing the previous problem must have allowed writing to it.

I have thought of downloading the boot image to my windows and then write it to a newly formatted floppy using "rawrite.exe". And will see what happens then.

Thanks fancypiper for all your suggestions and loads of links.
