Unhappy Getting HD acceleration on HD 3450 and MPLAYER

Hello Guys,

this is my first post. Hope I didn't miss the topic elsewhere but SEARCH didn't seem to return anything.

I'm in the process of moving an older system (AMD Athlon XP 2800 & ATI HD3450 over AGP) over to Linux (Ubuntu 10.04). One feat I'd like to maintain is to watch HD movies. The CPU obviously isn't up to the task, but it worked fine on WinXP because the GPU did all the work whe using MPLAYER.

I've worked my way through tutorials, installed the patches from "Splitted-Desktop.com". Calling "vainfo" or starting mplayer-vaapi seems to tell everything is fine, but the HD video just won't work. The CPU lingers around 50-70% load, hardly any better than standard MPLAYER. Audio gets out of sync at high resolution, buffers run over after 1-2 minutes. If I try Full Screen, the system dies on me.

I have a suspicion, something isn't quite right with the AGP bus of the video card as it seems awfully slow in picking the video from the buffer.

Has anyone got a similar configuration nad me able to extend some useful hints ?
Any comment is welcome.

thanks

Have you installed the proprietary drivers? I am not sure about the support of the free radeon drivers for VA at this time.

Hey,
I don't know this will help or not but ...
My system configuration is AMD Turion X2 2.0 GHz, 3GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 3450 512MB dedicated grapics memory. I never had any problem playing 720p videos on VLC but faced some issues(not like major problem as in your case) whilst playing 1080p videos like lagging ,flickering screen on Windows and case is same with Ubuntu 11.04. I have installed driver from ATI official site.In my case, i guess it is due to old graphics card(architecture).

Have you tried a newer version of fglrx? The one you are using (8.72.11) seems to be well over a year old.

Smile it's working now !

slightly surprisingly, I got it to work.

The major problem seemed to have been the desktop animation (3D effects). Once I disabled those (right-click on deskto, then settings) HD video id fine. Apparently the desktop manager was trying to use the GPU for it's fancy animations while MPLAYER was shoving over HD content. This caused the Athlon-CPU (!) to overload. The "top" command was showing mplayer taking ~15% of CPU with jerky video, but xserver taking 20-30%. When the effects were turned off, xserver dropped to some 10% as well and video went well.
P.S: it still required the patched version of MPLAYER from Splitted-Desktop Systems. The standard MPLAYER, even selecting "gl avivo" as video output wouldn't use the GPUs acceleration.

...may I ask the admin to move this post to the proper forum

Hello,

I do have the same goal, to get HD acceleration on a Linux box using the same video card ATI Radeon HD3450 AGP version. I found this thread as a good starting place but I failed to get it work

My system specs: Athlon 64 3000+, ATI Radeon HD3450, Linux Slackware 13.37. I'm using the default drivers that came with the distro, I didn't find proprietary drivers on ATI website (there is no Linux support for AGP versions of HD series).
What can I do in order to get that hd3450 card decode the hd content instead of my CPU?

I did installed modified libva_0.32 from splitted-descktop.com and the patch for mplayer mplayer-vaapi-latest-FULL.tar.bz2 27-Jan-2011 17:38 17M.
When I try to open an 1080p movie by entering this command: mplayer -vo vaapi -va vaapi -ao alsa demo.mkv the mplayer windows doesn't launch and in console I get this result after the movie finish:
Quote:
bash-4.1$ mplayer -vo vaapi -va vaapi -ao alsa demo.mkv
MPlayer SVN-r32819-4.5.2 (C) 2000-2011 MPlayer Team

************************************************
**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
************************************************

Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
- Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
- Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
- Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
- Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
- Broken file
- Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
- Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
- Try -nocache.
Read DOCS/HTML/en/video.html for tuning/speedup tips.
If none of this helps you, read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html.

A: 16.2 V: 9.6 A-V: 6.562 ct: 0.003 0/ 0 149% 14% 3.6% 170 0

Too many video packets in the buffer: (202 in 33662952 bytes).
Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed?
For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option.
The movie doesn't stop, but the console reports too many video packets in the buffer until the end of the movie and the CPU load is between 92% to 100%.

You can download the drivers for PCIe HD cards, and use them on AGP HD cards.

I can't guarantee that video acceleration will work with the proprietary drivers, but I can guarantee that it won't work without them.

@Sasser

Hi,

I didin't read anything about your desktop setting. PLease note mine only works when 3D destop effects are entirely turned off. You may want to use
$top

to get info on what is actually taking up the CPU.

I haven't watched many HD movies since, I have to say. It works for me with e.g. the trailer for "Bourne Identity" which is available on the internet. This is non-encrypted HD! Any required decryption would invariably take place on the CPU and stuff it.

-> Mine too. I'm using xfce which is pretty light, no transparency or other fancy stuff.

What kind of proprietary diver did you used? As I see on ati's website there is no linux driver for HD3450 AGP version.

The PCIe driver works - thanks Adam
I installed again libva and struggled with installing xvba again and new install of mplayer-vaapi
Now the hardware decoding works pretty nice! I've tested with different samples and there is a important difference in CPU load and movie looks & feel.
But, some movies still doesn't play well, some flicks in white and show bad frames. In the console I get this info after launching those movies with mplayer -vo vaapi -va vaapi -ao alsa demo.mkv

xvba_video: driver does not support H.264 content over HP@L4.1. Please upgrade.

Launching those movies just with mplayer demo.mkv doesn't flicker, but sacrifices the hardware decoding.

I'll dig about this, but if anyone knows what to do, I'll appreciate some help.
