If you give more information and provide more details as to what you are trying to do, etc., people will be better able to help. Please for starters at least describe what you are trying to do and what it actually allows you to do.

Re #4.

'update-alternatives' is provided by the basic package 'chkconfig': /usr/sbin/update-alternatives
* May be 'update-alternatives' isn't in your PATH ?
Please do $ su - ( su<space><hyphen> )
! No 'update-alternatives' in your PATH with plain $ su

java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u15-0.1.x86_64.rpm is an old unsafe version, and not for RHEL 5.
Is for an OS with a later version of 'rpm'.

? Which java version is really required ? ?

Remark : Do not use rpm to install downloaded packages.
Please use # yum localinstall <package>.rpm
... Then the dependencies will be installed too.

You can't. And why should you ? The package is "as wrong as possible" for RHEL5.

Repeat : "Which java version is really required ?"
