getting DSL to acknowledge my phone
 

I am a newbe at linux. My ubuntu on my desktop picked up my HTC hero phone automatically.
I have DSL on my laptop because ubuntu wont install on my laptop due to bridges on my motherboard
(Toshiba Satellite A60 ----bios 2005) DSL is the only version of Linux that will install but getting off topic.
Is there a package or something that I need to install so my DSL linux will acknowledge my phone?
Any assistance will be most appreciated.

DSL is discontinued, so you're looking for support for an old OS with an old computer! You might get lucky, but there may be another solution. A quick search shows that people have installed many versions of Linux on it in the past, including Ubuntu. You might need a driver for the 802.11g wifi: have a look on the net.

DSL is not really dead, but has not changed since 2009.
The people who worked on it in the past see no reason to change it, as it has met all of its goals.

If you liked DSL and want something a bit more 'edgy', try TinyCore Linux.
Some of the same people worked on it, similar philosophy, very fast, very small, very useful!

some kind of apt-get maybe?
 

Maybe there is some kind of apt-get that will perform device detection then download the appropriate driver so that the system recognises my phone. Apparently, that is how ubuntu is doing it.
When my laptop dies i can put ubuntu on its replacement but until then DSL is what i got.

DSL dead??? really, according to LQ, DSL is number 2 in popular downloads with 994 downloads just in the past 30 days.

If you found other links showing other users who were able to
install Linux on a machine like mine then it would have been
helpful to pass those onto me. There are many Toshiba A60 models and mine is not Linux friendly and is documented as
such. Ubuntu install failed, Dreamlinux install failed, Freespire install failed, and so forth.

Lets not turn this thread into a distro blog....

Since you didn't say which model you had and which wireless card it has, all I could do was look on the web with the information you gave us: and that was generous, as you could have done it yourself! I was just trying to point out that you are a minority of a minority, so there may not be anyone here with the experience to help.

To ask a question successfully you need to say exactly what the problem is and what you have done so far to try and solve it. Have you joined the DSL forum? Have you looked on the DSL wiki?

I tried tiny core as suggested earlier but I have the same problem. This tells me
that make and model of my laptop is irrelevant. I have already done the search you
suggested which is how I learned that its the bridges on the motherboard that limits
me to DSL or tiny core. These are working so if someone has the magical
command or apt-get to acknowledge my android HTC hero phone, I will be most appreciated.

The exact problem is: (Which I stated in my origonal post)
I plug my Android phone in USB port of my laptop and I get nothing using DSL as operating system.
When I plug my android phone in USB port of Tower at home running Ubuntu, It picks
it up automatically and makes it functional and ready to use.
Clearly, something is running in ubuntu that detects that I plugged something in USB port, determines what it is and makes it usable. Surely, there must be a way to make DSL
perform in the same way.

You talking about automatic mount of filesystem from your phone. This task is made by udev and automount. I do not known if these can be installed on DSL.

There are many great features of DSL, some of them possible only because it uses an older and smaller kernel (2.4). udev is not supported (to my knowledge) in kernels of that series.

Tinycore uses the newer kernel, but is pared down to the smallest size that can support a desktop. It sacrifices some features to meet its design goal.

Your laptop is suitable for several linux distributions that are limited or specific, it is not well suited to a graphic desktop. I do not have experience with that model, and cannot tell you if there is a solution. I suspect your best solution to providing a desktop that will support that device will involve a different laptop.

I would not give up just yet, but at some point you have to determine if the time you have burned is worth more than the solution. This laptop my simply not be suitable hardware for what you want it to do!

We may be getting somewhere. I thought that your computer simply wouldn't talk to the phone, but if the problem is that DSL doesn't auto-mount, then the answer is obviously to mount it manually. Perhaps this may be a start?

I don't see any logic in that statement. You have two different distributions (that have nothing in common besides being small and running from RAM) that are not working, so why is that telling that the hardware is irrelevant?

This makes me very curious. What types of bridges are you talking about, and in which way are they limiting you to these two distros? May be if you post the problems you have with other distros (failed is not enough, provide exact error messages and descriptions of the problem) we can help you to install and run a full blown distro that can easily handle your phone and automounting problems.

A few things,
1) I will definitely save the link for wireless connection, that is interesting

2) I downloaded ISO for Ubuntu 11, and started the install to duplicate the errors so I could report in more detail, it installed so I will close out this thread. I can only figure that maybe the burn to older Ubuntu 8.04 cd was somehow corrupted. That doesn't explain it because I have used that disk to install on other machines. Whatever, Ubuntu 11 installs.

3) I am upset that I cannot locate the website that I found before that described the problem with the bridges on the motherboard. I guess that will teach me to save things better.

4) I booted live with Puppy linux 5.28 and it recognized my cell for internet connection, that was cool.

5) I like the idea of starting with a basic system like DSL and then just adding the modules I need so as I figure out how to do that, I will post the info for other newbies as I figure it out.
