getting binary output while opening .pdf and .doc files

I have just shifted from windows but
am wondering how to open .pdf and .doc
files using acroread or any other application.
Am getting an output that is not human
readable;combination of binaries and other
characters.i have also tried xpdf but am still
getting the same output.

I would suggest using evince if you are using a GUI.

better yet check out this link....
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/open-a-...-linuxfreebsd/

I've used evince and pdftohtml (though sometimes the latter outputs in a weird format for me at least).

Hope that helps

In linux open office and acrobat reader can be easily installed, why don't you try them, They are free and easy to operate while open office is just similar to the MS office in windows.

adobe reader on linux ( and windows) is a piece of junk

for PDF's use
Evince - it is installed by DEFAULT in Gnome
Okular - it is installed by DEFAULT in KDE

for reading Microsoft PRE 2008 .doc format
use LibreOffice or Openoffice

for reading Microsoft POST 2008 .docx format
use LibreOffice or Openoffice
