Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

Can you please elaborate on what vfone is? I've
never come across the term.

Cheers,
Tink

Hi Tink,
You must be having a bad day, this is not like you. Are you not up to your usual sharpness?
remember Google is your friend.

I guess that the connection is possibly wireless due to a wired infrastructure limitation. Doubtless the setup is proprietry and probably wireless. PTCL is Pakistan Telephone Company Limited (guessing of course) and TCS is Tata Consultancy Services. Tata is a company BIG in Indian steel and launched the worlds cheapest(?) family motor car during 2007 or 2008.

I'm maxed out at this point, but hope it's enough of a thread for someone to grasp. I don't suppose that Forculate has considered moving telephone zones?

A retrospective look at Google maps puts Khanewal, Pakistan pretty much on the Pakistan/Afghan border. I exagerate somewhat of course, nearer 400 miles, but a little over 100 miles from the escarpment, on THE main road in the area. Local industry may well major in hard rock quarrying for the whole continent. Another exageration!
Relocation is definitely a high priority to get a choice of ISP not using wet string as a communication medium.

Don't know that I've been a lot of help to you indirectly Forculate, but Tink is surely up on his geography and knows a little more about your local situation already.

I don't suppose that it's an ADSL type of connection. The phrase "This ISP doesn't support *Linux* usually means that they don't answer questions about it", usually due to lack of appropriate technically competent staff. If the protocol in use is TCP/IP then the protocol is standard open source anyway and not a problem.

Do you run software that runs the connection protocol to your ISP? Is that software necessary. I ask this question because a friend of mine was going to load ISP provided connection software until challenged why. He is broadband connected, so doesn't need it. Ubuntu would connect for him with a couple of clicks. I imagine that your connection is dial-up, perhaps you can help us understand that part. A lot of us have largely forgotten about dial-up because in the west it has been eclipsed for some time now.

Regards,

Neither you, nor I, nor Tink should have to use Google or any other search to discover info. that OP should have thought to provide.

I'm more surprised that the title "Help me out" provoked no chiding.

forculate,
How about some more info.? Even a good link would be helpful.

Instead of chiding one could also report the thread for title modding.

Given that a Mod had already replied to the thread, I thought that superfluous. Of course, I hadn't then checked to see if said Mod (Tinkster) is a Mod for this sub-forum. I have now & he is. Who am I to tell him what to mod?

Besides, if you (the Mods) give guidance, you will see fewer bad titles & less work; if you only fix the problems, you may actually encourage more bad titling. :twocents:

Apologies to the OP.

@archtoad6: I am not chiding you, consider it a general suggestion. And it is not about telling a mod what to do but suggesting attention. Reporting makes sure it does not skew the thread. Guidance is something all LQ community members should be able to give if as long as it is done in a friendly and respectful way.

So basically, if you don't want to read through the above remarks, please tell us the type of internet connection you have, is it dial-up via 28.8k or 56k modem, or is it via ADSL or other broadband connection ?
