gentoo sound, and distfiles

I have installed gentoo lately, and managed to get my X, mouse and the rest only after a lot of problems. Now, i have 2 prob. left. One is the sound and the other are the distfiles. My distfiles are not ou to date, emerge sync and emerge rsync don't work. Isn't there any *.tar.bz2 containing all the distfiles that i can download(emerge-webrsync don't help).

Another problem is the sound. My modules don't work. I am sure and verified tthat i had included the correct modules (my card is a VIA chipset) but i can't find them in /lib/modules/2.6.7/kernel. Moreover, alsaconf don't detect it. What must i doo?
Please HELP

if the alsa drivers are built into the kernel instead of modules, also cong will not detect them.. but that doesnt matter, they are already installed.

whaat do you mean doont work ? Error messages ? descriptions of the problem ?

what does it say when you type
Code:
dmesg | grep ALSA
dmesg | grep Alsa
dmesg | grep Via
dmesg |grep VIA

also try

Code:
alsaconf
ohh, juts remembered......
Have you installed alsa within emerge and added it to to init scripts with rc-update program ?

as fro the server.. maybe its odwn, that hapens sometimes... i hear the servers somtimes struggle with the popularity of gebto...

or maybe your IP address has been blocked temporerily for abusing the system (you shount rsync more than oonce every 24 hours)

There is a great
Alsa Guide for gentoo

is your portage tree up to date ?
dont worry 'bout distfiles they will get downloaded when you install the software..
portage tree MUST be up to date though. there are snapshots on one of the many gentoo mirrors.
if emerge gives you errors. there is a rescue howto in

/usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/files/README.RESCUE

i have tried:
dmesg | grep ALSA
dmesg | grep Alsa
dmesg | grep Via
dmesg |grep VIA

and this is the awnser:

ehci_hcd 0000:00:10.3: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0
uhci_hcd 0000:00:10.0: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller
uhci_hcd 0000:00:10.1: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (#2)
uhci_hcd 0000:00:10.2: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (#3)

however alsaconf won't work. It tels me that there are no PnP or PCI cards. And then asks me if I want to probe some ISA sound card/chip. If i select yes, IT awser me this might get my system unstable and then says No legacy drivers avalable.
Help

You need to get emerge fixed first,if you can't emerge,you must have done something wrong along the way,you need to follow the guide word for word and not jump in to fast or problems like this will happen!

i follloed all the steps one by one. And double chequed afterwards. I havn't modified any flag exept USE and PROTECT_KEYWORD must i configure MAKEOPTS and the others exept CHOST?
Because the problem is in the rcompilation of the source code.

this is my make.conf

# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built$
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i386-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
USE="dvd alsa"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/rsync.gentoo.org/"
CONFIG_PROTECT="-*"
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"

Is it OK?

this is NOT okay. delete that file. and rename file /etc/make.conf.sample into /etc/make.conf then edit THAT new file.

The stuff you are looking for is this: http://www.freehackers.org/gentoo/gc...flag_gcc3.html as far as your flags go.

Your emerge does not work cause that gentoo-mirror does not exist that's all.
here's good list of gentoo mirrors i've been using for quite a while now:

GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/
rsync://cudlug.cudenver.edu/gentoo
http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo"

Also here's my UNCOMMENTED parts of make.conf, that i use on my systems, please note that i mostly run servers, and the only desktop is right now off so don't pay too much mind to USE variable...:

USE="-X -kde -qt -gtk -gnome apache2 x86 -java"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/
rsync://cudlug.cudenver.edu/gentoo
http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo"
RSYNC_RETRIES="10"
RSYNC_TIMEOUT=90
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
AUTOCLEAN="yes"
FEATURES="sandbox ccache fixpackages"
CCACHE_SIZE="1G"

etc-update is a command that updates you config files located in /etc directory, run it, its mostly safe, the general rule is to only care about files you know you edited before, if its a new file that you don't know about, ignore it and just let etc-update do what it wants to do with it.

i have modified my /etc/make.conf like this:

# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built$
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
USE="dvd alsa cdr"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/
rsync://cudlug.cudenver.edu/gentoo
http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo"
CONFIG_PROTECT="-*"
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
AUTOCLEAN="yes"
RSYNC_RETRIES="10"

Is it better, but i always have the same error in recompiling:

!!! ERROR: media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.6a failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 362, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed

help. You seem to know 1000 times more than me. HELP

i could almost emerge sync. however, it gave me this error:

>>> Updating Portage cache... \Fatal Python error: GC object already tracked
Aborted

and then again this error when trying to emerge alsa:

!!! ERROR: media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.6a failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 362, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed

i have been able to emerge other files. But only some, and it gives me similar errors( changes the lines) for a lot of others programs i tried to emerge.

First I'm no expert,I can't emerge alsa drivers also but that is because I enabled support for my soundcard in the kernel,can you emerge alsa-utils?What kind of sound card do you have,is it onboard or a card?

my card is an onboard QDI. A VIA chipset. I am sure i included the modules in the kernel. And i could emerge alsa-utils. I could. But i still i can't run alsaconf. And if I understood well, i must disable the sound card suport in my kernel in order to emerge alsa-drivers?
