Gentoo portages

I'm not getting it. I want to install rtorrent for instance, I found this page:

http://gentoo-portage.com/net-p2p/rtorrent

But the files to download seem to just be text files, I read them and have no idea what they're on about. I read somewhere that I had to download one of these and then write something like:

properganda@box~: ebuild ./rtorrent-0.7.9

for instance, but that doesn't work. I won't bother printing the error message as I know I'm using it wrong.

Please help... I seek enlightenment.

Have you tried just doing
Code:
#emerge rtorrent
That should fetch rtorrent from the web and install it for you.

Gentoo is like, magical, and mystical, and full of wonder...

is it right for a linux to be this easy?

It feels as guiltily wrong as fun with lubricant.
