General maintenance Mandrake 9.1

Hi, I've been using Mandrake 9.1 with KDE and IceWM and am happy with it, but I wonder if there is some general maintenance I should be doing to keep it peforming well. One question I have regards a couple files named "core####" that are now in my home directory; konqueror says they're 78 megs apeice and are program crash data, what do I do about these? Thanks.

These are indeed program crash data. When a process fails catastrophically, it tries to write the contents of its memory to a core file for later analysis. Use the file command to find out which program produced the core files ('file core####'). You can use a debugger to find out what happened, or you can just delete the files if you don't care - they're not needed for normal operation of your system.
