Angry GDM Login Screenshots (I tried to research)

Hey,
I have made some new login screens and I'm trying to take screen shots of the screen to no avail... I am Running debian sarge 2.6 (stable)
here is what i have done...

echo $DISPLAY
--- this command returns NULL, so i chose :0.0, since that is what all the websites have said worked for them. Then....
chvt 7; sleep 3; XAUTHORITY=/var/gdm/:0.Xauth DISPLAY=:0.0 import -window root /opt2/testpic.png
This is the error I get...
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
import: Unable to open X server ':0.0'
(also tried :1 and that returned an image but it was just the screen that shows up before something runs in X [that crosshatch pattern stuff], and im sure its from my VNC server that I had running)

ok, that didn't work... so i tried xwd.

xwd -out screenshot2.xwd -root -display :0.0
xwdtopnm screenshot2.xwd | ppmtojpeg >testmenew.jpeg

didn't work either. (same error as above, connection refused by server)

Is there a reason "echo $DISPLAY" is returning a NULL? shouldn't it say like ":1" or ":0.0" or something?

also tried to just login from my windows box using VNC but I forgot that it goes directly to the desktop not the login screen. (I was going to take a screenshot in windows), a friend told me to get a remote X server running so i tried that, but I have no idea how to connect to it from my windows box... ugh...i just want it to be easy! lol

Thanks for the help ahead of time!
~Matt

One thing you could try is gdmflexiserver (I am using Fedora Core 3, though I doubt this is a distribution specific command), which starts gdm in a nested X session while you are already logged into your desktop:
Code:
gdmflexiserver -n
For example, here is what that looks like on my computer:

Then you can do a screenshot with import or whatever tool happens to suit you.

Hope this helps!
