gcc-4.0.1--How long is normal for 'make'?

I'm about 3 hours into 'make' for gcc-4.0.1 and am wondering if this is normal regarding the time. It seems to be doing whatever it should do, and has not locked up, but it just seems like a very long time to install a program. Is this normal?

I'm an EXTREME Linux newbie (Red Hat 9.0) and would sincerely appreciate any help. My previous programming experience is with JBuilder, Dev-C++, Visual Studio and Sun One; all windows based. But I have a professor this fall who refuses to allow anything 'windows based' for coding assignments so I really need to get this gcc thing up and running.

Thanks,

J

What are the specs on your computer? 3 hours to make gcc seems like a very, very long time, but you say it's still working and hasn't thrown any errors?

Thanks bose, Dell Optiplex GX110, 750 mhtz, 256 ram, Red Hat 9.0. It finally finished the 'make' but I am not sure what to do now. 'make install' doesn't work and just for the heck of it, I tried gcc and g++ and got 'command not found'.

I am really lost as to what to do now,....and I (almost) started crying! (REAL programmers don't cry, I know!) I just can't figure out how to get this thing to work.

I am really stressing this, and thanks for your help.

J

ya, there is something very wrong if you can't "make install"...............3 hrs is too long also...........I build LFS 5.0 on a P3 850 mhz box....and Gcc-core took about 25 minutes to ..."make bootstrap" .........you might want to re-download a new gcc source and try it again......the other may have had a bad source tree.....
