You need to load some modules.
try some of these commands.

modprobe joydev

if youhave a SBLive:

modprobe emu10k1gp

or:

modprobe gameport

there are also some specific modules for soundcards and
joysticks. to find out which ones best suit you, grab the latest kerenl, untar it, run make xconfig in the directory which you untarred it to (usually /usr/src/linux)
then in jump to the appropriate sections (i.e. character devices, soundcards, multimedie etc.etc.) and see which modules you sould load for your gameport and soundcard. you can see the name of the module to ´modprobe´by checking the info on a kernel option. no need to save changes, this is just useful sometimes to look upmodules and stuff. Hope you inderstand some of this.

also see if you can install the unix joystick drivers from your distribution, they can useful utilities such as jstest and jscal to test your check your joystick after you htink you installed following the above steps.

peace out
