game problem

I am a very new user to linux, and i am very used to working in a windows enviornment. I rencently downloaded a game for linux, and i have no idea what to do with it the games. The two that i have downloaded and tried to play are here and here . Please remember that i am very new to linux and any prcedures would have to be explained in a step by step manor. Thanks for you time.

bosewicht 03-09-2004 04:15 PM

they have a forum there, i would check in there, i just did a real quick search and found quite a few posts

qwijibow 03-09-2004 04:45 PM

so... whats the problem ?
i doubt any1 here is going to spend hours downloading these programs to tell you how to install them...

you will have to desbribe whats in the zip files.
and post the contents of any readme / install files.

generally speaking... if you see a configure and makefile files, then its source code and needs to be compiled in the usual ./configure;make; su root -c "make install"
method (unless other specified)

if you see rpm's then rpm -Uvh [somthing]

or maybe there are procompiled binary's wich need to be coppied somwhere.

no1 here is psychic, and no 2 linux machines are identicle. to help people help you, you need to post as much relevant info as possible.

woow. racer looks like a GREAT game. im downloading it now..
there are detailed installation instructions, what part of them dont you understand ?

bosewicht 03-09-2004 04:48 PM

I still say go to the forums where u downloaded the games. with a simple search you can find ur answers yourself

evilmrhenry 03-09-2004 07:13 PM

I already had the Ufo game. In order to run it, I:
Unziped the file,
Ran the file 'ufo'.

If that doesn't work, run it in a console window, (cd to the right directory, run './ufo') and report the error given.

Sonte 03-09-2004 08:46 PM

Okay i am a real nubie when it comes to linux so i basically know nothing about running it. I just installed it last week and i have no real idea what i am doing. I could not find a installation file for racer and the readme file just had version updates in it i got this from the consol and it is basically all the files in the tar.

okay...
linux nubie tip #1.. its not "dir" anymore.... use 'ls'

maybe you missed the instructions on the website...

there are 2 possible install methods...
Binary or source.

the binary instruction method...
download binaryXXXXX.zip
download dataXXXXX.zip

su
[root password]

mkdir /usr/games/racer
cp binaryXXXXX.zip /usr/games/racer
cp dataXXXX.zip /usr/games/racer
cd /usr/games/racer
unzip binaryXXXX.zip
unzip dataXXXX.zip
exit

to run the game....
cd /usr/games/racer/racerXXX
bin/racer

where /usr/games/racer can be anywhere. you like
and ive but XXXX when i can remember exact file names :D

it seems the binary is quite old....
ive been having trouble getting it working on my modern linux distro.
it looks like the game is a windows game which has been very poorly ported to linux.

i would recomend you download torcs...
its a racing game with computer opponents, many cars, many onroad / offroad tracks.
many diferent AI's and a real physics engine.
search google.com/linux for homepage.

According to the site, there is supposed to be a racer0.5.0/bin directory. I don't see it. My guess is that you got the data files without the binaries. From here:
http://www.racer.nl/dl_linux.htm
get the Linux v0.5.0 data files and Linux v0.5.0 binaries for nVidia. (Assumming you have a nVidia card. If you don't, you need to compile the source code, which is likely beyond your ability.)

By the way, if you are running a redhat or debian based system, there are easier ways to do this.

qwijibow 03-09-2004 09:46 PM

they do not provide rpm's !

in my opinion its a poor project.

the binary has many missing dependency's.
there is no configure or install script, so the source is hard to fix.
and even the windows installer will not work (under windows 2K)

i there are better games out there.. torcs for example.

Sonte 03-10-2004 12:44 AM

Okay i decided to take your guys advice and just go with torcs. Sorry to qwijibow for making you type all that stuff and not using it, but i figured if you had problems i would be a fish out of water. However i have a new problem that i hope you guys could help me will i started downloading all the torc files and then i went to requirements to run. the first one is Opengl and i think i have that, but i am not entirely sure. I have a ati rage 128 pro and the drivers that were built into redhat 9 seem to work fine with the system. Next thing i needed was freeglut so i got the latest release and un tared it. Next, in consol, i loged in as root and went to the freeglut directory and ran ./configure. This is were the problem is, it runs for like two seconds and then it says "checking for cc......no" next line "configure : error : no acceptable cc found in $PATH". I have no idea what this means and couldn't find anything about it on the web page. Any and all help would be greatly apreciated.

evilmrhenry 03-10-2004 01:24 AM

Since you are running Redhat, I would strongly suggest using .rpm files whenever possible. RPMs exist for both torcs and freeglut.

qwijibow 03-10-2004 06:34 AM

i dont think torcs provides rpm's.

dont apologise, i dont mind helping.
this site helped me alot when i was a beginner.

OKAY........
freeglut is an implementation of OpenGL.
Redhat Has Glut (anouther implementation of OpenGL)

for higer graphics performance you may want to install ACTUAL opengl by downloading the linux ATI drivers from ATI.com

Games often say you need Glut, or Free Glut. But OpenGL, Glut, and FreeGlut are made to very specific standards, Any of them will work.

Ok... Next.
Quote:

checking for cc......no
cc = c compiler.

run the program 'redhat-config-packages' either from comman line of in the main menu.
and scroll down to development tools.

in the development section, install
'Development Tools'
'X Software Development'

now you have all the tools needed to compile new software.

now... download the following files.....

TORCS-1.2.1-data-cars-extra.tgz
TORCS-1.2.1-src-robots-base.tgz
TORCS-1.2.1-data-cars-Patwo-Design.tgz
TORCS-1.2.1-src-robots-berniw.tgz
TORCS-1.2.1-data.tgz
TORCS-1.2.1-data-tracks-base.tgz
TORCS-1.2.1-src.tgz

(DONT download this one, it is buggy)TORCS-1.2.1-src-robots-K1999.tgz

not all those packages are required, some are optional.
but i did i full install.

make a new directory, and copy all those files which have src in there names.
these are the source files.

example...
mkdir /home/username/temp
mv TORCS*src*.tgz /home/user/temp

now move into that directory with
cd /home/user/temp

and extract all the files seperatly with
tar -zxf TORCSXXXXX.tgz

after you have done that, use the command

"./configure"

if there is no error

"make"

if there is no error
"su"
[enter root password]
"make install"

you can now delete the temp directory.

now, you need to install the data files.

copy all the TORCS date files to the directory
/usr/local/share/games/torcs/
which has beed made by the install of the source

(you should still be root, if not use the su command again)
cp TORCS*data*.tgz /usr/local/share/games/torcs/

now install the data.

cd /usr/local/share/games/torcs/
and extract each file seperatly.

tar -zxf TOURCSXXXdataXXX.tgz

you can now delete the tgz files.
torcs is installed.

to play, run the command 'torcs' from command line, or make a shortcut on your desktop / main menu.

i know this must seem complicated now, but after a few months, it all becoms second nature.

and what evilmrhenry was saying is correct, its much easyer to install by rpm when you have the opertunity.

It does appear to. Right on the download page:

Binary Packages For Red Hat and Fedora Core

You can download binary packages for Red Hat and Fedora Core executables and data.
with links to freshrpms.net.

I'm a Debian guy, so I wouldn't know if there would be any 'gotchas' with those, but they look quite useful.

Sonte 03-10-2004 08:43 PM

Okay, I did everthing you told me to. Also i installed all the additional software needed to run the game. After all this when i try to run the game it gives me the error

/home/sonte/.torcs created, copying/linking game data
/usr/local/lib/torcs/torcs-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libglut.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

so did i do something wrong. Any and all help would be greatly apreciated.

It appears something went wrong in installing glut. Are you sure you installed it? Were there any errors?
