FTP with filezilla

I am attempting to connect to my schools server and since lftp and ssh have done nothing productive I have turned to FileZilla and so far I am unable to connect to the schools server. Is there a way to connect to a remote server that I am not currently on with FileZilla? if so how do I do that?

At the top of the window where it says "Host," type in a url or ip address.

I have attempted the to type for example the school machine I am attempting to use is hydra1 so I tried hydra1@dept.school.edu
Is this what you mean for url? I will try the IP address now though

can the server type have anything to do with the ability to connect? School is a Linux server. I have both OS's so does that have something to do with it? should I chose one over the other

No, that does not matter. I ftp from windows and linux machines to linux and bsd servers.

May I suggest that you post error messages that you get. We're currently blind.
