ftp server installation

hi guys,

Im new, I need to install ftp server on my online ubuntu server...I am a developer and I need to setup ftp on my server. We have a dedicated server on which UBUNTU 8 is installed. I have installed proftpd and its running...but I cannot connect to my server via FTP...proftpd is installed and I still cannot connect using my FTP Client...

My domain name is firstreleasehomes.com and I am trying to connect to this via one of the ubuntu OS user that I have in it...Also I checked and found that the IP to eth0 is different from the IP of the domain....this I found by ifconfig and pinging the domain name. I am using filezilla to connect...

I really need to set it up...I need your help guys...its very urgent....

looking forward to your quick reply...

Thanks in advance...

Ahtasham

what are the error messages?
Is there a firewall?
You need to open the ports on the firewall.
what do you mean by different ip's?
which ip's?

I am using filezilla...and trying to connect to the following host.... ftp.firstreleasehomes.com

I get the following error...
Status: Resolving address of ftp.firstreleasehomes.com
Status: Connecting to 216.218.175.11:21...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server
Status: Waiting to retry...
Status: Resolving address of ftp.firstreleasehomes.com
Status: Connecting to 216.218.175.11:21...

I dont know whether it is behind a firewall...its a live dedicated server so I believe it must be....

I dont know how to check it locally...

its ubuntu 8.04

I installed proftpd by apt-get install proftpd...and I installed it as inetd

if I do ftp localhost...I get the following...
ftp localhost
ftp: connect: Connection refused
ftp>

I dont know how to check on what interface its listening...

I really need your help...thanks,

Ahtasham

make sure the ftp server is running
Code:
/etc/init.d/proftpd restart
then try again
Code:
ftp 127.0.0.1
Do you have a firewall at the server?
what is the output from
Code:
iptables -L

what do you mean with Do you have the invite...I have the root access to the server...and how did you get this message...I tried many times but I get only the following...

Status: Resolving address of firstreleasehomes.com
Status: Connecting to 216.218.175.11:21...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server
Status: Waiting to retry...

I dont go further than that....I am using one of the ubuntu user/password combination to connect to it...but it cant be the username/pwd as it wont pass the connecting process....

Hi,

I just checked again the IP 216.218.175.11 (firstreleasehomes.com). No response now. Checked in a few minutes again this time with sftp and was able to reach. Of course no password but reachable.
