ftp questions

Very strange occurrence. I did search the forums, but I was actually able to ftp in and upload stuff a week and a half ago. Now I can't. I didn't change any of the settings on either the linux box or my ftp client.

Running RH 9, Proftpd,
Accessing from an XP box using both ws-ftp and core-ftp.
I have created an FTP group on the linux box and put myself in it.
I get a "connection refused" message.

HELP!

Bob

Hi Bob!

Check that you have a listener to port 21:
~> netstat -nl
There should be a line like this:
Code:
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:21 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
Also, check that you have the ftp daemon (vsftpd or wu-ftpd) and xinetd activated:
~> redhat-config-services

Martin

Thanks Martin!

OK I ran the netstat -nl and found I didn't have anything listening on 21. There are about 10 tcp lines but none have :21.

So how do I fix that?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi again!

As I said, redhat-config-services (or from the start menu 'Server Settings' > 'Services'). Make sure that you have one of the ftp daemons and xinetd enabled. If you turn on an ftpd, then 'Save' and restart xinetd to activate changes without rebooting.
