ftp problems


I a new to any command driven os, I only used windows. I am trying to learn Linus and am having a problem with Ftp. I am studying networking and am trying to connect to a router, I am getting a message saying "host name lookup failed". I am in ftp, I type open, then port com1. I need some help???

What type of router? What are you trying to accomplish?

The correct syntax for FTP is:
open xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ( i.e. address) or
open ftp.ftpserver.org (just an example)
