just looks like there is no ftp server running, but either way, it's going to be 100% windows, very very unlikely for this to have anything to do with Linux at all. why would it working in one direction reflect in any way on the solution working in the other when the role of both machines completely changes?

yes you've now said that three times, but that's really not going to help if you don't even have an ftp server running under windows.

To ftp between computers, you need an ftp server on the computer you are trying to connect to, and you need an ftp client on the computer you are using.

If it works in one direction, that gives no assurance it will work in the other.

The "ftp" command is a client, and not a server. An ftp server needs to be running on the target machine.

You might want to download "Network Administrators Guide" from the www.tldp.org website.
