Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I just installed RH 6.2 last night on an AMD 450Mhz machine. Normal install setup nothing complicated. After it successful installed, I run netcfg to setup my machine to be part of my small home network with machines connected to a router. This machine can connect to the internet and can be connected via telnet from other machines. The only problem is that I can't FTP into it. I get a "421 - Service not available" message. I looked into this forum for a similar problem and followed advises there. So far this is what I have done to investigate the problem.
1. Check /etc/hosts - ok
2. Check /etc/inetd.conf - ftp service is uncommented. - ok
3. Check /etc/ftpaccess - ok
4. Check the inetd daemon is running - ok
5. Check /etc/host.allow and /etc/host.deny (both empty) - ok
6. Check /etc/ftpusers (empty) - ok
I can ping to this machine from other machines and I can telnet to this machine as well. However,
if I test the ftp server using "ftp localhost" it does not work and get "421 Service not available" message.
Can somebody help? What else should I looked at.
Shall I just re-install the software again?
