ftp & telnet 127.0.0.1 aren't working



hello,
i have a problem here scince i installed linux i can't ftp or telnet
on my self
i get an error message " conection refused "
i have installed all the rpm packages that have ftp or telnet in its name from the CD, what else could i do ????

Hi rinux,

What version of linux do you have and what os are you trying to connect to? Can you ping that machine and vice versa?

i have redhat 7.3 i am trying to check the services themselves at first , i can ping my loopback 127.0.0.1 but i can't ftp or telnet
plz reply soon it os urgent

Have you got the services enabled? As root run:
ntsysv

and select the services you require to be started on startup.

if you want to ftp or telnet to the machine you need to have the respective servers running.

'rpm -qa |grep telnet'
'rpm -qa |grep ftp'


and check if the above command gives out the servers. if they are not there then you need to install them. if they are installed then you need to configure them

first i have a silly problem i can't find pipe in my keyboard
second how can i configure them, i need to know the exact name of the 2 services plz when i run " service ftp status " i get unrecognized service i think they r not installed but these r all the packages on the CD that have ftp or telnet in their names
how can i know the packages needed to install certain service ??
