Frustrated newbie....internet problems
 

Hey everyone. Ever get to that point where you overload your mind and it turns to mush? That's where I am right now.

I got a spare PC and decided I'd give Linux a try on it (Redhat 9). Until I really learn Linux my plan is to have this PC be my firewall/router.

I've gotten the Linux PC up and connected to the Internet....with no big problems. Then I hit a brick wall when I tried to get my other PC (Windows XP) to access the net.

The machines can see each other, can ping each other, but the XP machine is just not getting out.

Can someone help me?? Before I drive myself crazy and totally give up?

At this point I don't really care about sharing files between the 2 PC's, I'd just love to be able to share the internet connection (which is DSL).

Also if anyone could help me via the Gnome GUI, that's even better (I'm a little itimidated by the command prompt)

Ok. I know two ways using Linux as Rooter. A simple one ( I don't use this one *g*) and a hard one. The simple one is to use the one Disk Rooter.
And the other one is to compile a kernel with masquarding options.

Hope you can speak a little bit german. Otherwise I could help you too or post you If i find it the config file for the kernel. However it is the config file for a 2.2.20 kernel. But it works fine.

You need to write iptables script (to do masquerading). There's a nice thread about it: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...t=iptables+NAT
What you need to do is copy the script and modify the IPs, then run it on the router.

Simple option for me (using RH9) was to use two X applications.

One is called guarddog. This is to configure your firewall (iptables) and is VERY good and pretty easy.

The other is guidedog and that sets up forwarding.

They have just added the RH9 rpms too - so it should be even easier.
