Fruity Loops with Wine?
Greetings. I am brand new to this site but it looks like a sweet one. I am an MCSE Network Specialist who is fed up with the corporate engine and it's money machine. Hence, I have decided to go back to my roots and do things the way we did them back in the day, open source, open ideas, open projects. Without stuff like Linux companies like MS wouldn't have all their money. Sometimes I forget that Bill Gates and those dorks used to be in their garage like we were all doing and had the balls to make what turned out to be a smart decision. Anyone remember soldering a kb onto their Timex Sinclair? Have I dated myself?
Anyhow, off the pedestal. I am a DJ and DnB producer in my 'sparetime' and want to be able to dump Windows XP entirely. My only hiccup at this point is that I cannot find any good production suites for electronic music that run under Linux. I purchased the SuSe 9.2 Pro set and am very happy with the results. I even have my wireless up and running. I read somewhere that it includes Wine, which is an emulator for Windows. How can I get Fruity Loops, Sound Forge, Acid, etc working with Wine? Is this possible or should I keep a small Windows partition for this kind of thing? Cheers |
Some people seem to have FruityLoops working, check the Wine databse for levels of success:

I don't see a lot of succes on SoundForge because of the DirectX libraries. http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=529 You can also try Audacity which runs nativly on Linux and is very nice for simple sound editing. Check out this site for documentation on how to use Wine: http://www.winehq.com/site/docs/wine-user/index |
I've used Sound Forge briefly and Audacity is very similar and a pretty good program to boot :)

for your Acid needs, you might consider Ardour

sweet. thanks for the information. I'll give all of your suggestions a whirl. So far I like SuSe and am already becoming more comfortable with it.
